Dangerous Enumbers in Your Food

The packaging technology used in the foods today is very sophisticated. It is done in such a way that the food lasts longer on the shelf without being consumed. This is achieved with the help of a lot of preservatives in the food to keep it fresh. If you take a closer look at the pre-packaged foods, you will find at least a dozen different preservatives in a number of products. Among these, there are a few Enumbers as well.

Ever wondered what are these and why they can be found in the most loved foods of today?

Read on to find out:

The Enumbers are complex compounds which are responsible for a number of functions in the packaged food products. They provide colour, they add taste and help preserve the products, thereby increasing their shelf life. Some of these Enumbers are obtained naturally while some are synthesized. The natural ones are safe for consuming. However, they artificial ones provide grave danger to the body. These food additives have often been given the controversial status amongst customers due to their synthetic nature. They are said to cause allergies and discomforts.

While some of the food additives offer mild risks and are are not so extensively used, there are others which affect on a large scale. These are potentially life threatening and can even cause permanent damage to the body.

The following are the Enumbers which are the most dangerous:

  • E129

This is commonly referred to as allura red and is used extensively in wines, sauces and soups. It is dangerous for the people who are suffering from asthma and rhinitis as it can aggravate their present condition.

  • E951

It is the most common additive around and is commonly known as aspartame. This is used as a sweetener in a lot of non-sugary products. High dosages of E951 can cause headaches, multiple seizures and in extreme scenarios, may even lead to blindness.

  • E210

This is a very common organic agent and is called as benzoic acid. It is widely used as an additive in cereals, meats, low-sugar foods and various drinks. However, it has many side-effects. It can inhibit the enzyme functions in the digestive process. It is especially harmful for people who are allergic to certain foods. It can manifest itself in the form of hives, asthma and hay fever.

  • E320

Commonly referred to as BHA or butylates hydroxyanisole, it is used in the food products which contain fats. It is considered to be carcinogenic.

  • E226

The common name for E226 is calcium sulphite. It is largely used in all food products ranging from burgers, biscuits, mushrooms and horseradish pulps. Its main function is to keep the food fresh. However, its side-effects include low blood pressure, bronchial issues, flushing and in severe cases, can even trigger an anaphylactic attack.

  • E249

E249 or potassium nitrate is used for prolonging the shelf life of the canned products which include meats and fruits. However, it can prove to be lethal as this additive can substantially lower the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood. It also combines with other carcinogens forming nitrosamines which to turn out life consuming.

The recent technological trends in the food proceeding have made these Enumbers a necessity. However, these can bring harm to you in a lot of ways. Make sure you read the ingredients at the backside of the food product you are purchasing.
